David E. Bloom
David E. Bloom is Professor of Economics and Demography at the School of Public Health, Harvard University. From 1995-99 he served as Deputy Director of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Prior to joining Harvard, he was professor and chairman of the Department of Economics at Columbia University. He also served as associate professor of economics at Harvard, assistant professor of economics at Harvard, and assistant professor of economics at Carnegie-Mellon University. Professor Bloom earned a PhD in Economics and Demography from Princeton University in 1981; a Masters in Economics from Princeton in 1978; and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in 1976. Professor Bloom's research interests include labor economics, health, demography, and the environment. He has written extensively on population growth and human development, changes in the world labor market, the economic impacts of HIV and AIDS, the mortality crisis in Russia, and the economics of solid waste management. His current research focuses on the links between demographic change and economic growth in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Currently, he serves as co-director of an international Task Force on Higher Education and Society and as a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors of Science magazine.
